Solar Energy → Thermal Solar Design

Domestic Hot Water Energy Consumption at 30 gal/pers per day:

DHW E [Btu] = Wflo [gal/d] * 8.3454 * cp * (Thot - Tcold)

Wflo = 90 gal/d for 3 persons = 3 * 30 gal/pers per day
cp = 1 Btu / lb / F
Thot = 110 F
Tcold = 52 F
Density of H20 = 8.3454 lb/gal

Therefore;
Thermal DHW consumption DHW E = 43,500 Btu per day.

Ideally that would be the amount of Solar Energy that we would like to collect.

SunEarth Empire Collectors (EC32) can collect -> 700 Btu / ft2 / d in a cool climate.

Sun Earth Empire Series Specs

Since one collector panel has 30 ft2 of net area, it follows that 21,000 Btu / panel / day can be collected on a clear day, because:

700 Btu / ft2 / d * 30 ft2 = 21,000 Btu/d.

And with 2 panels of 30 ft2 each, the amount collected is 42,000 Btu/day on a clear day. This is 97% of the DWHE of 43,500 Btu, the DHW energy consumed by 3 people (see above).
